Audience and Age Classification

When deciding upon what age we were going to aim our film at, we did individual research and then came together as a team to decide the age classification as we had mixed views on what we believed it should be.
I researched age classifications to have an idea of what criteria would be acceptable in each age classification, and Hannah did the same, we both used the website - The British Board of Film Classification.
I belived that we should classify our film as a 15, as the contents includes scenes which some people could find disturbing - 'a character death'.
We couldn't be sure that if we were to carry the film on if there was to be any swearing but we thought that most likely we wouldn't.
We don't belive that we have any content of a sexual nature, again if we were to continue the film and relationships within it, there may be kissing but nothing above that.
We also don't believe there to be any drug references as that does not follow the theme of our film. Personally i rated the film a 15 because i wanted to be on the safe side to make sure the work was not offensive to the age group aimed at. The main reason i classified it 15 was because of the significant character death and subsequent events.
However, when talking to other people to recieve feedback on what they believed it to be and whether i was not being lenient enough, they said that 15 was too harsh and Hannah's rating was more realistic, but only the 12, not the 12A as people under 12 could become distressed by the content. They said because there is no significant drug and sexual references that 12 would be suitable.
As a team we decided that we would rate our film as a 12 as it deals with topics that may be distressing for any younger market yet there is no significant drug or sexual references or graphic scenes.
We would advise any parent before letting there child view it that they either watch it first themselves to determine suitability or check the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) for further advise.
