Film Synopsis

Justice is a thrilling drama, sure to make you cry. 18 year old Alisia is left devastated at the death of her best friend Jack, who was killed in a head on collision with a drunk driver. In the beginning she is overcome with grief, the manor in which Jack dies encourages Alisia to try and get justice not only for Jack but for the 1000s of people killed each year by drunk drivers. The film shows the difficulties and triumphs of Alisia's journey, her thoughts being discredited because of her young age.
This dramatic coming of age film is bound to leave you re-evaluating your choices when driving.

As the footage that we will film will only be 2 minutes of the whole film, we will only portray certain elements of the synopsis. Our footage will include the moment in which she finds that Jack has been killed and her reaction to the situation, causing her to have flashbacks of their life together. The opening scene ends with the title 'six months later', picturing Alisia in front of a courthouse. The voiceover tells us that she will not stop until she gets justice for Jack, however in the opening scene the audience is unaware of the circumstances in which he died just that it was unlawful as she wishes to pursue justice for him.

Music Permission

When searching for music to use while the film was playing behind the voiceovers, we came across Chris Haigh's backing track, The Awakening, a short music backing track that would fit our theme and feel of the film perfectly. We discovered this very early on in our planning and knew straight away that it was the music that we wished to use, so even though we hadn't filmed the film yet, we decided to email Chris Haigh to ask for permission to use his music, so not to break any copyright infringement laws. We did this early so that we could give Chris time to reply as he is very busy working on several big Hollywood films. We didn't know if we were going to receive a reply but we decided to try anyway because we really wished to use his music.
Chris replied to us within a few weeks, right after we had started filming.

He said that he didn't have a problem with us using his track however he didn't publish it so we would have to get in touch with a company called Imagem Production Music in London so that he could grant us the licence to use it, but he didn't believe they would have a problem with it. He went on to send another email to say that if we did use his music and got there permission to make sure that we send him a link to the finished film.

We used my email address but signed it from the both of us, however when replying because it was from my email address they only credited me in the email, we cannot show the other emails due to including personal information.

Immediately after receiving this email, I emailed Imagen Production Music and told them of how I had emailed Chris and he told me to get in touch with them and if it would be possible to use the music. They replied within the hour saying that we could of course use the music and that there would be no licencing fee as it was for school purposes. They also again went on to send another email asking us to send them a link to the finished movie when we were done.

We would like to thank Chris Haigh and Imagem Production Music specifically Gareth Owen for helping to increase the quality of our film by letting them use their music, it is very much appreciated. Thank you for your support.

First Script

Justice
By Sara Devine and Hannah Ginns

Scene begins with Alisia (Actor 1) putting the kettle on.

(All dialogue is in the form of voiceovers)

Alisia: My Mum always said everything happens for a reason, that your life is simply planned out for you.... (While this is playing, credits appear on screen)

Scene fades slightly - title appears with the name of film.
Phone rings, Alisia moves to answer phone, shot to show that it is 'peter' she answers.

Alisia: (diegetic sound) hello Peter, I'm surprised to hear from you, haven't seen you in a while (person on the line is talking, audience cannot hear what is being said, but from the expressions on actor 1s face it is assumed to be distressing news as suddenly her face drops and she reaches for counter to support herself) yes I understand, thank you for contacting me I appreciate it, give my love to Lisa and the rest of the family, I will come by soon...I'm sorry (Alisia hangs up, unable to talk any longer)

(Scene cuts to a field with two young children [younger versions of the main characters] arriving at an unknown destination [Rockingham Castle] and dropping there bags) [FLASHBACK]

Alisia: Losing someone is never easy, losing your best friend, your best friend since you were two...well that's another story, they leave this huge gaping hole in your heart, one that even though it gets smaller with time it will never be truly filled...always holding that special place in your heart.

(Scene cuts to the same location with two teenagers [the main characters] arriving at the same destination [Rockingham Castle] as the first pair and dropping there bags)

(Alisia walks through passing the living room, she glances in)

(Scene cuts to the two teenagers sitting on the sofa and talking) [FLASHBACK]

Alisia: Everywhere you go, every little thing reminds you of them.. there isn't a single day you don't think of them even if it is a meaningless thought at the back of your mind. [3]

(Alisia takes a seat in the living room and looks outside it is raining [pathetic fallacy] she suddenly sees Little Jack beckoning her to come with him. - she turns and runs out of the living room and opens the front door)

Alisia: You see whoever said loss gets easier with time is a liar[2]. Here's what really happens; the time between when you miss them grows longer, and then when suddenly something reminds you of them, it's with a stabbing pain to the heart, you have guilt, guilt because it's been too long since you missed them last.

(Scene cuts to the two young children from the first clip chasing each other up steps, getting to the top and both deciding they won, playful pushing, then walk and look out over the wall slowly getting closer to one another. ) [FLASHBACK]

Alisia: Me and Jack we were the best of friends, ever since we were kids we would go to Rockingham Castle, playing in the grounds everyday afterschool as Jack's Dad worked there, all of our memories are from the grounds, they were our own jungle, our personal journey and adventure.

(Scene cuts to the two teenagers from the first clip chasing each other up the same steps, repeating almost the identical movements to the young children) [FLASHBACK]

Alisia: We did everything together, I don't remember us ever falling out, well not seriously you know we have the normal almost sibling fights but we never stop speaking for more than one day. We just couldn't stay away from each other. We were in our own little world, each others protectors from the big bad world, but this time I couldn't save him [6]  (long pause for dramatic effect)

(Alisia is running out of the house and down the streets in an unknown destination, seemingly chasing a young Jack, who is coaxing her to come with him)

(cuts to a scene of two young children having a picnic and chasing each other around a tree.) [FLASHBACK]

Alisia: Our favourite thing to do was picnics under our favourite tree, I remember we used to think it was magic, our childhood imaginations running away with us.. it was our calm, our serenity, our peace of mind and we loved it.

(Cuts to a scene of the two teenagers having a picnic, eating and laughing with one another) [FLASHBACK]

Alisia: I know you're wondering how did he die, when did he die, (2) you know how I know (2) because for some reason or another we seem to have this morbid fascination with tragedy, with other peoples misfortunes, there own personal reality show. People seem to be more interested in how he died, than the amazing and wonderful life that he lived!

(Alisia arrives at the destination from the clips, little Jack who was in the previous scenes has seemingly disappeared and Alisia continues to run, stopping at one point and looking around, assumingly for Jack)

(While the next paragraph is being said, Alisia arrives at the 'magic tree' and falls to her knees, close up shots showing her distressed and pained expression - it is clear she is not sure what she should do with herself, ends with her looking up at the sky.)

Alisia: Ivan Turgenev said 'sternly, remorsely, fate guides each of us; only at the beginning when we're absorbed in details, in all sorts of nonsense, in ourselves, we are unaware of it's harsh hand' (4)

(Scene cuts back to the house, and the kettle that was being made in the first scene finally boils and a large pitch whistling can be heard)

Alisia: and he was right, in the beginning I was too absorbed in my grief to see clearly, but not the fog is slowly lifting from my eyes and I know I have to get justice for Jack, my Jack, his death will not have been in vain - sleep peacefully my angel.

(Scene fades out and another scene appears with Alisia dressed in business wear, holding files standing by a wall - which will symbolise a court, as you can not film in front of a court. A title appears stating 6 months later)

Audience and Age Classification

When deciding upon what age we were going to aim our film at, we did individual research and then came together as a team to decide the age classification as we had mixed views on what we believed it should be.
I researched age classifications to have an idea of what criteria would be acceptable in each age classification, and Hannah did the same, we both used the website - The British Board of Film Classification.
I belived that we should classify our film as a 15, as the contents includes scenes which some people could find disturbing - 'a character death'.
We couldn't be sure that if we were to carry the film on if there was to be any swearing but we thought that most likely we wouldn't.
We don't belive that we have any content of a sexual nature, again if we were to continue the film and relationships within it, there may be kissing but nothing above that.
We also don't believe there to be any drug references as that does not follow the theme of our film. Personally i rated the film a 15 because i wanted to be on the safe side to make sure the work was not offensive to the age group aimed at. The main reason i classified it 15 was because of the significant character death and subsequent events.
However, when talking to other people to recieve feedback on what they believed it to be and whether i was not being lenient enough, they said that 15 was too harsh and Hannah's rating was more realistic, but only the 12, not the 12A as people under 12 could become distressed by the content. They said because there is no significant drug and sexual references that 12 would be suitable.
As a team we decided that we would rate our film as a 12 as it deals with topics that may be distressing for any younger market yet there is no significant drug or sexual references or graphic scenes.
We would advise any parent before letting there child view it that they either watch it first themselves to determine suitability or check the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) for further advise.

Purpose of film

We have decided that our film will come under the drama genre, which means that if we were to create the whole film it would do the following things:
  • It will exhibit real life situations with realistic characters, settings and narratives.
  • Revolve around a tense and dramatic story line that will often make people cry.
  • It will emotionally move a person.
  • Include character development, showing how they grow as a person from the beginning to the end of the narrative.
  • The heart of the drama is the conflict the ultimately ensues.
  • It will be structured with climaxes and anti climaxes which will keep the audience emotionally attached and the tension ongoing.
  • End with a form of realisation and narrative resolution. (Happy Ending)
However if we to create the whole movie we could break these typical conventions for artistic purposes and to keep the audience attached and constantly anticipating what is happening next, helping to increase the emotional attachment to the characters.

Our main purpose within the opening scene is to evoke emotion and establish the main storyline giving the audience an idea of what to expect throughout the movie so that they can decide within the first two minutes if the film is something they wish to continue watching.

The decision of what drama was done as a pair, everything else was done individually.

Film Name Ideas

We have came up with several film name ideas as a team which we think would fit our drama narrative. These include:

  • Departed
  • Bittersweet
  • Forsaken
  • Dejection
  • The calm before the storm
  • Bittersweet Forsaken
  • Timeless
  • Vanish
  • Faded
During a discussion with my partner we narrowed it down to several ideas in which we decided we did not like several of the names and some of them we did like but it was not possible to use due to copyright infringement issues. To help to decide on which name we shall use, within the questionnaire we have previously created we have included the top four names we could use so that our target audience could decide which name appealed more to them and would make them develop an interest in going to watch it. These names were:

  • Bittersweet Forsaken
  • Truant
  • Justice
  • The calm before the storm

Narrative Ideas

When planning and deciding upon what we were going to create the opening scenes of a movie about, we came up with several ideas within several genres most of them being of the drama genre as we originally had an idea in our head that we wished to pursue this genre and create a storyline to fit it. These are the top three storyline's that we decided upon out of the various we came up with. Our final three were:

1. Two best friends have to come to terms with the fact that one of them has been diagnosed with a life threatening illness, and the adversity in which they will have to overcome because of this potentially terminal diagnosis.

2. Several children get taken over by a mystery cause - which will be revealed at the end of the film- this causes them to rock backwards and forwards and repeat a distorted version of 'round and round the merry go round' spreading until ultimately it causes a widespread national pandemic.

3. A teenage girl discovers that her best friend has been killed in a fatal car crash caused by a drunk driver, who survived, this initial devastating phone call causes her to have flashbacks of their childhood together and some of their favourite memories in a specific place that they visited often. It ends with the title 6 months later showing the same girl dressed in business wear carrying folders, at this point it fades out, as that is where we would end it, if we were going to carry the film on it would be about the girl trying to get justice for her best friend and have some peace of mind that others will hopefully not end up like her best friend due to alcohol related crashes and incidents.

Narrative Idea
Amount of people (When asked 20 people)
Idea 1 - Two best friends have to come to terms with the fact that one of them has been diagnosed with a life threatening illness, and the adversity in which they will have to overcome because of this potentially terminal diagnosis.
5
Idea 2 -Several children get taken over by a mystery cause - which will be revealed at the end of the film- this causes them to rock backwards and forwards and repeat a distorted version of 'round and round the merry go round' spreading until ultimately it causes a widespread national pandemic.
2
Idea 3 - A teenage girl discovers that her best friend has been killed in a fatal car crash caused by a drunk driver, who survived, this initial devastating phone call causes her to have flashbacks of their childhood together and some of their favorite memories in a specific place that they visited often.
13

The most people chose narrative idea 3 and that was the idea we were leaning towards anyway, so we will definitely be going with this idea.
We have decided to go on to create idea 3 as it will hopefully evoke the most emotions and show off our media skills to the best of our ability, the initial idea however may be subject to change as we go on with the main task as we may develop problems in filming or come up with ideas to add to it as the project progresses.

Questionnaire Questions

Me and my partner Hannah (http://www.hannahginns.blogspot.co.uk/) worked together to create a questionnaire so that we would have an idea and understanding of what people would wish to see when watching a drama film and to help us decide upon names not only for the film-to which we already knew the storyline-but to the name of the company that we would use like ignite productions. We have done this so to plan our film to aim and appeal to our target audience in the best way possible.
